Your Krankenkasse is the institution that anchors your German healthcare for as long as you live and work in Germany. You'll call it at signup, again when you want to switch providers, again when you've paid for something out of pocket and want it back, and again when your card vanishes from your wallet at the worst possible moment. Four calls, four scripts, four agents who will reach for German first.

The opening that opens every call
Whichever Krankenkasse you're with — TK, AOK, Barmer, DAK, or one of the smaller funds — every call begins the same way. The agent answers, gives the company name and theirs ("Techniker Krankenkasse, Frau Schneider, guten Tag"), and waits for your opening sentence.
The opening sentence is always:
Guten Tag, ich bin <Vorname Nachname>, Versichertennummer <…>.
If you don't have your Versichertennummer in front of you (signup call, lost-card call), substitute geboren am <date>, versichert seit <month/year>. The agent's screen pulls up your record from any of those keys.
After your opening, agents typically ask Wie kann ich Ihnen helfen? ("How can I help you?"). Your answer is the call type — signup, switch, reimbursement, lost card. That's where the four scripts diverge.
Call 1: Signing up (signup, after Anmeldung)
You can sign up with any GKV (gesetzliche Krankenversicherung) Krankenkasse the day after your Anmeldung at the Bürgeramt. The Anmeldung gives you the Meldebescheinigung, which most Krankenkassen require for the signup paperwork. Your employer may have already pre-registered you — ask before calling.

The agent will ask for your address (use the one on your Meldebescheinigung), your employer's name, and whether you want any add-ons (Zusatzversicherung — usually no for first signup). The Mitgliedsbescheinigung typically arrives by post within 7–10 days; some Krankenkassen email it within 24 hours if you ask.
Call 2: Switching Krankenkasse
The German GKV system lets you switch Krankenkasse after 18 months of membership without giving any reason — or earlier if there's a Sonderkündigungsrecht (special right to terminate, e.g. when your current Krankenkasse raises its Beitragssatz). The GKV-Spitzenverband publishes the rules and the Bundesministerium für Gesundheit (BMG) enforces them.
Critically: you sign up with the new Krankenkasse first; they handle cancelling the old one for you. You do not call the old Krankenkasse to "leave."

The new Krankenkasse will send you a form (or e-form) authorising them to cancel the old one. Sign it, return it, and the switch takes effect on the first day of the second month after the form is processed — usually 4–8 weeks total.
Call 3: Asking for a reimbursement (Erstattung)
Reimbursement calls cover the cases where you paid out of pocket — vaccinations during travel, certain prescriptions, alternative-medicine providers if your Krankenkasse covers them. Statutory reimbursement is governed by §13 SGB V; specific rules vary by Krankenkasse.

Call 4: Lost or damaged card (Ersatzkarte)
The eGK (elektronische Gesundheitskarte) is required at every Hausarzt and Praxis visit. Lost cards are common; replacements are free.

The Krankenkasse will issue a printable Ersatzbescheinigung (interim certificate) by email within minutes. Show that to your Hausarzt instead of the card.
