This guide walks through your first week in six steps, with real screenshots from the app and a real B1 text. Two things first: GoetheCoach grades writing only, not speaking. And GoetheCoach is not affiliated with the Goethe-Institut; a practice score is not an exam result (as of October 2026). The app works in English too; the screenshots show the German interface.

Step 1: Where do you stand? The Prüfungs-Check
The Prüfungs-Check takes about 3 minutes and needs no account. You pick your exam (A1 to C2), answer 6 to 10 short language questions that adapt to your answers, and 4 questions on exam technique: do you solve the tasks the way Goethe grades them?
You end with an honest estimate, for example "B1 is realistic for you". It is not a certificate level but your starting point for the plan.

Step 2: Your weekly plan to the exam
Add your exam month and the check turns into a weekly plan: how many weeks are left, what you practise each week and when a mock exam comes. You can subscribe to your practice slots in your phone calendar; changes sync on their own.
Don't know your date yet? Pick "Weiß ich noch nicht" and add it later. What a good study rhythm looks like is in How to prepare for the Goethe exam.
Step 3: Write a task in the exam format
You write on an exam sheet: the task with all its Leitpunkte at the top, your text below, and the app counts the words. You write the text yourself. If you get stuck, the KI-Tipp gives you a sentence opener for the next Leitpunkt and you take it from there.
You can type on your phone or computer, or paste a text in. Already wrote something? Paste it into the chat: GoetheCoach recognises the level and task and offers to grade it.
Our example: a B1 email to a friend (Teil 1, about 80 words) with three Leitpunkte: how the concert was, how her health is, a suggestion to meet. The text has 85 words, but Leitpunkt 3 is missing and three sentences have typical mistakes.

Step 4: Read your grading
After you submit, you get points on the four Goethe criteria: Aufgabenerfüllung (task completion), Kohärenz, Wortschatz and Strukturen. You also see which Leitpunkte you covered, and every mistake quoted from your text with its correction.
Our sample text scored 30 of 40 points (75%). A pass, but only 5 of 10 for task completion, because the suggestion to meet is missing. Marked were "mit meine Kollegen" (correct: mit meinen Kollegen), "Danach wir sind" (Danach sind wir) and "weil du warst krank" (weil du krank warst).
Instead of just "pass", GoetheCoach shows three zones: safe (70% and up), borderline (55 to 69%) and not yet. The points are an estimate; regrading the same text moves them by about ±5 points. How we calculate and how well it matches trained raters is in How GoetheCoach scores writing.

Step 5: Understand, revise, practise
Below the grading you ask the tutor chat, for example "Erklär mir den ersten Fehler" (explain my first mistake). The answer is short and comes with examples, in German or one of 9 languages, including English, Turkish, Ukrainian and Hungarian. Tasks and sample texts stay in German.
Then you revise your own text and submit it again. In our example: three mistakes fixed, plus "Hast du nächsten Samstag Zeit? Wir könnten zusammen ins Kino gehen." New grading: 38 of 40, Leitpunkt 3 covered, and the card shows what changed per criterion.
Finally the chat offers a 1-minute drill on your weak spot, here word order: tap the words into the right order, check, done.

Step 6: Mock exams before the date
Towards the end of your plan you write exam simulations: all Teile in a row, with a time limit, no AI help and no spell check. You find out whether your time is enough before it counts. Why you should aim for 70% rather than 60% in practice is explained in 60% on a practice test: is it enough?.
Frequently asked questions
Is GoetheCoach free?
Starting is: the Prüfungs-Check, placement, weekly plan and 10 AI gradings (one text each) are free, no credit card. After that it's unlimited from €4 a month on Patreon, with a teacher check at €9 a month (as of October 2026).
Which exams is GoetheCoach for?
The Schreiben module of the Goethe-Zertifikat, A1 to C2. GoetheCoach does not grade speaking. It is not built for other exams such as the telc DTZ; task formats and grading follow the Goethe certificates.
Is GoetheCoach official or from the Goethe-Institut?
No. GoetheCoach is an independent practice tool and is not affiliated with the Goethe-Institut. We use the public criteria and rating forms; a practice score is an estimate, not an exam result.
How accurate is the grading?
On 124 exam texts rated by trained raters (MERLIN corpus), our verdict matched on about three in four texts. Regrading the same text moves the score by about ±5 points. The least certain range is the borderline zone from 55 to 69%; there another text or the teacher check helps.
Does GoetheCoach work on a phone?
Yes, in the browser on phone, tablet and computer, no app to install. Longer texts are easier to type on a computer, but you can also write elsewhere and paste the text in.
Can I get my own text graded?
Yes. Paste it into the chat. GoetheCoach recognises the level and task, asks if something is unclear, and grades it with one click. If you have the task prompt, add it so the Leitpunkte are checked too.
Do I have to do the Prüfungs-Check?
No, but it's worth it: without the check and a date you don't get a personal plan. You can also write a task straight away and do the check later.
