Task Format in A2 Writing

The A2 writing module contains a single task: you write a short, informal message or email on a familiar everyday topic. Three content points are specified in advance — all three must be addressed. Texts should be kept short (approximately 30–40 words) but clear and to the point.

Common Topics in A2 Writing

  • Invitations to birthdays, parties, day trips
  • Plans for the weekend or holiday
  • Describing living situation (new flat, moving house)
  • Cancellations or notifying of delays
  • Shopping or to-do lists
  • Simple enquiries about courses or events
  • Describing hobbies and leisure activities

Assessment Criteria in A2 Writing

  • Task Fulfilment: Were all 3 content points addressed clearly and comprehensibly?
  • Comprehensibility: Can the text be easily understood even with some errors?
  • Vocabulary: Were everyday basic words (approx. 1,300 words) used largely correctly?
  • Grammar: Were basic structures used — past tense of "sein/haben" and simple connectors (und, aber, weil)?
  • Register / Format: Was the text written with an appropriate greeting and sign-off in an informal, natural tone?

Tips for the A2 Writing Exam

  • Count your points. Write the 3 points as a checklist — tick each off once you have addressed it.
  • Write in full sentences. Bullet points are not enough — each content point needs at least one complete sentence.
  • Learn typical opening sentences. "Ich freue mich sehr, dass …" / "Vielen Dank für deine Nachricht …" / "Ich wollte dich fragen …"
  • Learn connectors. Simple linking words like "und", "aber", "weil", "deshalb" bring your writing up to A2 level.
  • Practise 10–15 minutes a day. GoetheCoach gives you instant feedback after every text — you'll progress much faster than with books alone.
